We were tasked with designing a shell and tube heat exhanger that would bring a process stream of liquid styrene at 140°F to 200°F before being fed to a reactor. A high pressure steam line at 400°F and 80 psia was available to heat the styrene stream. For our heat exchanger, we had to determine the diameters, lengths, and materials for the shell and tubes, as well as the tube pitch, number of tubes, and how many passes.
