The goal was to design, build and test a strong and lightweight wing box that can take a minimum load of 10 lbs (which we achieved). The box was then tested to failure load.
The wing box was entered into an Airbus competition in which we tried to maximize the load our wing box could take. The weight of the wing box was 0.369 lbs (maximum allowable weight was 0.5 lbs). The assigned minimum target load was 10 lbs; we achieved a final tested failure load of 17.3 lbs, the second highest load achieved by any team.
I computed deflections in MS Excel, performed prediction calculations in MATLAB, modeled the wingbox in CATIA V5, assisted in manufacturing the wingbox and contributed to the design & analysis report.
