Lower Leg Extremity Prosthetic. 10 week Design Team project in which the objective was to create a lower leg extremity prosthetic to fit a given socket for a certain activity. Using design matrices and QFD's, decisions based upon assumed customer needs, informed design decisions were made.
Currently, triathlon athletes have/utilize three different prosthesis during a triathlon. The purpose of creating this design was to ease the athlete from switching prosthesis when switching an event in a triathlon. The final design consisted of three main parts for each of the three activities the prosthetic will endure. Each of the following is described below.
Toe Clip:
-SPD-SL Cleat that fits and clips right into the bike pedal without having to strap in.
Fin:
-Rotating mechanism with locking pin that locks it to the side when swimming and straight when not swimming
-Carbon Fiber
-Pylon filled with foam
-One sided
-Aerodynamic when not swimming
Foot/Heel:
-Stainless Steel
-Rubber Sole
-Arch
-SPD-SL Cleat Insert on bottom
-Fin insert near ankle position
Estimated weight: 1.80 kg or 4 Lbs
Estimated total cost: $12,000-$16,000
Specifically, I was in charge of designing the solidworks model of the Foot/Heel. The design I choose allowed the toe clip and fin to be easily fit into the design.
