Torts are civil wrong doings that the courts punish liability. It is an action or omission that causes harm to another whether intentionally or unintentionally where an individual suffers from the act. Tort law also gives “relief” to the injured parties by punishing those responsible through injunction which are court orders to stop the harmful action, compensatory damages which is monetary reimbursement deemed equal to the incurred loss, and/or punitive damages which is compensation over-and-above compensatory awards to make-up for extensive harm done. This, in theory, helps to stop the defendant and others from repeating the harmful act in fear of similar punishment (Cornell Law School, 2018). Torts and tort laws pertaining to selfdefense and the defense-of-others are important to know if you are an individual who chooses to own a firearm. The choices you make under a given circumstance could me the different between the victim protecting themselves or becoming the aggressor.
