Mulch provides plenty of benefits for your garden. Using mulch can insulate your garden soil and prevent moisture loss. It can provide cover that prevents weeds and weed seeds from germinating. Organic mulch provides nutrients to the soil as it decomposes. In winter and cold weather, it can prevent frost. In summer, it can prevent dehydration.

There is a right way of using mulch to derive the maximum benefits. Using the right type of soil and proper application depending on the weather and the season will help you cultivate a thriving and healthy garden. Here are some tips to help you determine how best to use mulch:

General Care:

- When applying mulch, make sure it doesn't come into contact with the stem of your plant. Leave a 4 to 6-inch perimeter around your plant.

- When applying mulch for weed control, make sure to trim the weeds very close to the ground before adding mulch. This creates an even bed for your mulch. Remember that mulch controls weeds by denying them sunlight.

- If you wish to enrich the soil by adding compost, do this step before adding mulch.

- Remove mulch from areas of your garden where you wish to plant something new. This will allow the young plants access to the air and sunlight they need in order to grow.

- You can use a rake to spread out the mulch and create an even layer of mulch in your garden.

- Mulch from grass clippings where synthetic weed killers have been applied should not be used for the plants in your garden. The residue from the synthetic substance that is used to kill weeds can harm your plants.

- When creating or obtaining your mulch, check the source of the origin. You want to make sure they have not been created from weeds so that they do not introduce weeds into your garden.

Summer Care:

- In summer, use a mulch to prevent rapid evaporation of moisture from the soil by applying 1 to 2 inches of mulch in your garden. This is sufficient to keep the soil cool and moist.

Winter Care:

- In cold weather, apply a thicker layer of mulch on the ground - typically 3 to 4 inches thick. This will insulate the roots of your plants and prevent winter frost.

- Some plants benefit from being insulated in mulch. These small bushes can be completely covered in mulch to protect them from the harsh winter cold.

- Be sure to remove excess mulch in Spring.
