Theoretical Base for Practice
"Integrate theories and knowledge from the arts, humanities, sciences
and nursing to develop a foundation for nursing practice" (Ferris State University, 2011).
I believe that nursing theory helps to define the role of nursing and gives nurses a guideline for our practice. In the nursing occupation we use our nursing theory as guidance for research and education, to enhance nursing as a profession, and to provide quality patient care. Nursing theory gives nurses a foundation for practice and is an important tool for nurses regarding reasoning, critical thinking skills, and decision making.
In Nursing 324 I completed a group project with my peers on Dorothea Orem a well-known nursing theorist. This helped me to learn about the self-care deficit nursing theory and how it applies to my nursing practice. Additionally, other groups in Nursing 324 focused on other known nursing theorists important to the practice of nursing. Reviewing these PowerPoints helped to expand my knowledge of these nursing theories and how they applied to my current practice of nursing.
In Nursing 310 – Population based health promotion, I have evaluated different nursing theories along with evidence-based practice and how they tie into promotion of health in the community. I evaluated the LBGT population along with the health disparities they faced using theory and evidence-based practice with my peers to support a hypothetical health promotion plan. I have attached our PowerPoint on Health Promotion for the LGBT community.
The pieces I have included show how I have met the BSN program outcome of nursing theory. I believe I have a strong foundation in my daily nursing practice and will continue to use nursing theory to guide me in my daily work role. As a nurse leader I understand the importance of using nursing theory to help teach and guide the next generation under my supervision. As noted in Jangland et al. (2023), utilizing nursing theory into daily clinical practice is a fundamental way to provide a more purposeful and systemic approach for practice and increasing evidence-based practice, which will improve patient safety and quality of care.
