Theme 2: Critical Thinking - Level 2 Fieldwork Outcome
Project: Level 2A Fieldwork Final Project - Outpatient Hand Setting
Level 2 Fieldwork Outcomes: Demonstrate clinical competence through conducting
screening, comprehensive assessment, hypothesis generation, goal development, and implementation of evidence-based practices.
Discriminate safety risks and violations in a real-world setting and respond appropriately.
Artifact and Reflection: Prior to coming up with the idea for this project, researching, and then presenting it to the staff, I felt very inexperienced in my ability to assess patients and interpret the results of my assessment. However, I was able to demonstrate this theme at a level two outcome by thinking outside of the box and asking the question, “Could something else be causing these symptoms/lack of progress in my patient?” That question led to the creation of this project which was focused on gaining more insight into the pathology of different conditions and subsequent diagnoses after the initial injury. Additionally, I was able to demonstrate level two outcomes in this case study by completing comprehensive assessments such as the 9 Hole Peg Test, Functional Dexterity Assessment, intrinsic versus extrinsic tightness assessment, and grip and pinch strength with the patient. Based on these assessments, I collaborated with the patient to form goals using evidence and occupation-based activities. The most important takeaway I gained from this project was to take careful note of reported symptoms and look into the research surrounding common complications- as a goal for myself I will continue to research secondary diagnoses that accompany an initial injury. I see this project as a successful illustration of my ability to use critical thinking. I will continue to build on this skill throughout the program as I become efficient in determining outcome measures for different interventions and evaluating outcomes and implications while in my capstone.
