Boston Beer Company is a publicly held, multi-brand beer company once holding position as the third largest beer company in the United States. However, in recent years, the company has experienced a loss in market share. To better understand what caused the decline, this report analyzes the craft brewery industry, environment and the company by using Porter’s Five Forces as well as viewing Boston Beer’s SWOT analysis. Further, it will also explore Boston Beer Company’s financial ratios to help provide context regarding its operations compared to the industry. In recent years, and during a distinguished effort to maintain and grow market share in the craft beer niche, Boston Beer Company has failed to gain market share by struggling with brand identity and a conservative approach to acquisitions and mergers. This case study offers alternative solutions and recommendations on how Boston Beer can grow and become the leader in craft beer as their vision statement states.
