In the summer of 2019 I studied abroad in Japan and South Korea. For my final project for Honors’ study abroad in Japan and South Korea I decided to create an exhibition art piece. My work is inspired by the unique spiritual traditions of Japan. While in Osaka, I was struck to hear that two spiritual traditions are practiced in Japan that mingle organically in a unique balance. Shintoism and Buddhism are practiced almost simultaneously in Japan, in fact a lot of significant Japanese religious areas incorporate key architectural and traditional features from both practices. I found the harmony of Japanese spiritual life appealing and intriguing which inspires my portrayal of the two traditions in my artwork. My artwork is designed to depict the “line” that Japanese citizens appear to walk in their spiritual life through guidance from both traditions. My hope is that people will observe my artwork and become intrigued by the seeming dichotomy that seems to be alluded to through my depictions of scenes that would seem contradictory. I believe that my work has the ability to share a unique religious tradition that many observers may not have been exposed to previously
