This project was made during my graduate thesis in materials science and engineering at Virginia Tech. The goal of the project was to develop a low-cost metal additive manufacturing setup capable of depositing metal without melting. Several agencies directly showed interest in the results of the project including John Deer, the US Army, and others. The device uses friction and high compressive forces to extrude a metal rod beneath a high-temperature tool in order to produce a track of material from the rod without the need to melt it.
