A high-end LED solar simulator constructed in house at Safe Harbor Associates. This particular system was sold to a biotechnology company in San Diego that tests and studies algae samples for biofuel research. My role centered around the design of the custom 6-layer printed circuit board housed inside of the unit. Inside hardware includes National Instruments's sbRIO-9626 running LabView which allows individual control to all 196 LEDs inside the solar simulator. With all LEDs turned on 100% the lumen output is about 3x the light from the sun. Additionally, the LEDs can be pulsed up to 100 Hz in order to emulate the light experienced by an algae cell in a turbulent environment.
