Project Abstract: Research how students perceive & interact with the UMSI’s 30+ student affairs staff from the three student affairs offices (Office of Academic and Student Affairs (OASA); Career Development Office (CDO), and the Engaged Learning Office (ELO)). This study will help student affairs staff understand student engagement with its resources and people and explore opportunities to design improvements and/or new tools that build upon this UX research.
Project Outcome: Our team did extensive research and interviewed 32 UMSI student, staff, and faculty to create recommendations for a tool to increase student engagement. Ultimately, our team created a mobile application encompassing all of UMSI's resources in one place and also provided further recommendations for the UMSI team based on our research.
Methods Used: Our team started our project with extensive research. We were given a lot of freedom with the problem, and were able to conduct 32 interviews to come up with a solution that was research based. After these 32 user interviews, our team used a Miro board to consolidate our feedback and develop design ideas. We then created lo-fi and hi-fi designs that were iterated on with feedback from our class and client. Then, a final interactive prototype was created and validated through usability testing with current UMSI students. Finally, everything was documented in a final report and presented to stakeholders with final recommendations.
Impact: Our team was very excited to be involved in a project that directly involved us as students. The organization and their stakeholders really enjoyed what we created and are excited to explore the research we conducted with students, staff, and faculty, and hopefully incorporate some of the feedback we found.
Key Learning Outcomes: Our team learned many things throughout the course of this project. This was the first time for many of us getting hands on work with a client and taking a project from start to end. Some highlights include learning how to conduct interviews with many different groups of users, putting all of that research together to influence a set of designs, and documenting all of our process in an extensive report detailing every step.
