This was an experimental film project for my Experimental Film II class at Columbia College Chicago. The assignment was to make a very short film documenting a ritual action, and I chose crocheting while watching TV.
I was inspired to make this video because I have anxiety, which causes me to always be fidgeting and that sometimes can make watching TV hard or awkward for me. Having something to do with my hands makes calm activities like watching TV a lot more comfortable for me.
My biggest challenge with this assignment was making it not fit the natural "narrative" form. I had a lot of jumpcuts and harsh cuts in audio, and it was difficult not to automatically try to smooth it out. They were all intentional, especially the cuts between not crocheting and watching a tense horror movie, and crocheting to a more calm show. The audio was a big part of this project, it was used to symbolize the difference in mindset when I'm crocheting vs when I'm not.
