My first year here at San Diego State, I registered for a religious diversity class wanting to learn more about a religion other than my own. The assignment was simple: attend a religious event and write a short essay reflecting on the experience. Growing up Catholic, I decided to attend a church service to experience something different.
I decided to go to a church nearby, Faith Presbyterian Church, as a way to open myself up to new religious experiences. I decided to sit in the back and observe, as I did not know the practices, but even though I merely watched, it was a very rewarding experience. Not only was the church service in English, which was a big change for me, as I had only known religion in Spanish, but it also created a very different atmosphere from what I was accustomed to. The culture was different, but I soon realized that even though the views and beliefs were slightly different, they were still powerful and the people were equally as immersed in them as I was in mine. While writing the reflection for this assignment, I realized that although people may have different religions and backgrounds, it’s sill important to experience and respect them. In a world that’s quickly becoming more and more diverse, it’s important to open oneself up to new views and opinions in order to gain new perspectives that may be beneficial in future.
