Theme 1: Human Occupation & Health - Phase 2 Instructional Outcome
Group Project: What are the effects of positioning in managing symptoms of acute hypoxic respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in patients who are hospitalized?
This group-based rapid review project and presentation demonstrates adherence to phase 2 instructional outcomes. It was presented to professionals both in the field as well as to faculty and peers. For this project, all group members had the shared experience of encountering COVID-19 units in acute care while on fieldwork. This led us to investigate the best practices and theories surrounding patients who require hospitalization for this illness. We investigated with a rapid review of the literature which then allowed us to appraise the research we found and draw sound conclusions on the research that could benefit future patients. This project also allowed us to look for ways to integrate occupations into these treatments and better define our role in patient positioning- as it can facilitate better tolerance for other activities. We had some difficulty finding literature specific to the diagnosis and setting as it relates to OT in the beginning of our search but after consulting with a research librarian we were able to broaden our article selection. Overall, I believe this project allowed me to grow by distributing relevant information to others in the field and seeing exactly how to synthesize information from numerous sources into clinically sound practice. Our experience with initially having trouble finding sources allowed me to learn different search strategies that will be beneficial in the future as I integrate best practices into patient care.
