Among African Americans, racial identity has implications for mental health and risk behavior, particularly as it concerns anxiety, depression, and alcohol use.
I completed the First-year Innovation and Research Experience(FIRE)- Addiction Science -stream with the University of Maryland during the first 3 semesters of my college experience. During the final semester of this program, I was tasked with working with a group to conduct a semester-long research project on substance abuse and addictions. We chose to analyze if anxiety and depression acts as a moderator to alcohol use and abuse among young African Americans. I have always been interested in mental health and coming from a very diverse area I felt this project was one where the results would be tangibly useful to my understanding of the relationships of the communities I am a part of. In the end, it was determined that it was not a moderator, and this poster was presented at an annual symposium to the other students in the program, the University of Maryland academic community, and anyone from the general public who were interested in the research.
Many different research and analysis techniques were used in this program including IBM’s advanced SPSS statistics. This project taught me many applicable skills such as proper research protocol, proficiently presenting data and process, and advanced statistical analysis. Being able to speak on a level with leaders in a particular field also taught me proper etiquette when discussing in-depth topics. I gained a passion to look for relationships in the psychosocial sphere and have influenced my future research interests. I specifically was very involved in the presentation and following of our experimental procedure and methods section, so attention to detail is always at the forefront of my mind. Cooperation and respecting others' time is very important in any professional field, and as I was working with full time faculty and students each managing their own responsibilities, making effective use of time and planning objectives for each of us ahead of time was incredibly necessary.
