Introducing PlanIt ScanIt!

The Goal of the Project:
This is my second QUEST Honors program team-based deliverable of the 2019 spring semester. In this project, my team and I were tasked with developing a technological solution to any real-world problem of interest. We decided that given the seriousness and growing concern of climate change, we would develop a mobile application that would combat the ill-effects of climate change by incentivizing consumers to shop more eco-consciously at the supermarket. The goal of this project on the course level was to utilize a design-thinking, customer-centric approach in order to develop a mobile application that solves an issue. On a personal level, the goal of this project was to not only refine my understanding of the environmental effects of grocery-store shopping but also develop and present on a concentration outside of my major, wireframing.

Problem and Solution:
The problem that my team aimed to address and potentially solve, as mentioned briefly before, is poor environmental consideration exhibited in consumer buying behavior specifically at everyday grocery stores. The solution that we proposed as a team was PlanIt ScanIt, a mobile application that enables users to plan their shopping list while filtering by price, location and “eco-points”, a metric that determines how environmentally-sustainable a particular product is. The more environmentally friendly the product is, the more “eco-points” the user earns. Then, the app allows users to scan the barcode at the top of their receipt following purchase in order to determine how environmentally conscious the consumer shopped. Lastly, the application has a redemption where if a user has accumulated a sufficient number of “eco-points”, they may redeem monetary incentives, including coupons and gift cards.

Challenging Parts of the Project:
Given that my team and I only began finalizing the idea for the project after spring break, a week before presentations, we were very short on time and energy. We had to work tenaciously and delegate various roles and responsibilities with what we had available. Furthermore, we needed to spend many late nights crafting a strong deliverable, presentation, and solution. At some points, individual team members were unavailable to meet due to other conflicts. We learned to be accommodating and reschedule meetings to either be virtual through Hangouts or much later at night than usual. All in all, the challenges that presented themselves were pretty extensive, yet we did a strong job of handling each one efficiently and effectively.

Key Insights and Lessons Learned:
As an individual and as a team, there are many lessons and insights that we learned throughout this process. Firstly, when push comes to shove, even with a limited amount of time and resources, you can accomplish much more than you realize. While we had to make numerous sacrifices to accomplish what we needed to accomplish, we were able to prevail past the time crunch and meet the project guidelines while developing and refining a very viable solution for the market. On top of that, we came together as a team and produced quality work. Additionally, I learned a new technical skill out of it all, Adobe XD and I am now very passionate about the concentration of strategic design and innovation.
