ECE208 Assessing and documenting learning equipped me with a diversity of skills to observe, document, and assess a child's development against developmental milestones and learning domains. Interestingly, this course provides a perspective that supports the child's interests and shifts our focus towards a strength-based approach.
In the end-of-course assessment, I developed a portfolio for a 6-year-old K2 child where we evaluated their strengths in 2 learning domains as well as 2 play experiences. I found the assignment valuable to my learning as I would focus on the interests and strengths of the child through these interactions. It also enabled me to better identify the child's needs and to view them in a positive and objective manner. supported my understanding towards the child's needs that I viewed positively. As such, this process of developing the portfolio and observing the child through several experiences has provided a perspective that I feel is crucial to adopt as an educator as we learn and assess children's learning.
