"Demonstrate a level of professionalism that is congruent with the inherent values, ethics, and behaviors of the discipline of nursing" (SCHOOL of NURSING PORTFOLIO GUIDELINES and EVALUATION PROCESS PRELICENSURE BSN PROGRAM, n.d.)

To me, professionalism in the workplace is acting in a way that is respectable and in alignment with the policies and expectations of others within healthcare. How you act verbally, physically, and emotionally is a reflection of who you are and where you work which is why it is incredibly important to act in a professional manner. Patients, their families, and coworkers will not only have more respect for someone who demonstrates professionalism but will look to them for advice and as something to aspire to become.

I met the professionalism outcome through my work on my resource utilization presentation. In this presentation, my group and I highlighted the nursing code of ethics and their four main principles: autonomy, benevolence, non-maleficence, and justice. Then we described resource utilization and the ethical issues that exist in healthcare surrounding the distribution of resources. This pertains to professionalism because in order to be a professional nurse, care needs to be congruent with the code of ethics and their principles.

A huge part of maintaining professionalism is continuing education and improving knowledge. I am thankful for the opportunities Ferris State has given me to further my knowledge in all areas of healthcare. Recently, I completed a certificate for sudden infant death syndrome and because of this knowledge, I feel more confident in relaying pertinent information to new parents, which in turn makes me feel more professional. With this knowledge, I feel I can build trusting relationships with my patients and coworkers ultimately promoting my professionalism.

I met professionalism through my participation in service-learning. Through my participation I am dedicating my time, knowledge, and skills into improving the lives of the geriatric population as well as their loved ones. I showed up on time, in proper dress, communicated professionally with employees, families, and residents and acted in a way that reflected what professionalism means to Ferris State University and The Brook of Big Rapids.
