Govri is still working on this project

As someone who was raised in a culture where the topic of mental health is highly stigmatized, it was difficult to pursue a psychology degree at the University of Maryland. Mental disorders were seen as non-existent, and family members with disabilities were rarely spoken of, sometimes to the extent of which I never knew they existed. So when I decided to pursue a degree in psychology which studied the topic that was heavily stigmatized, my parents were hesitant. However, I was determined to break down my own internalized barriers surrounding the topic, and so I took the major. In addition, by completing an internship with the Challenge Program, a program that teaches classes for adults with disabilities, I was exposed to new perspectives and experiences which shaped my overall growth surrounding the subject. I am adamant on continuing my advocacy for mental health in the legal field, especially for those who suffer at the base of the criminal justice system, and aren’t given a voice to express their perspective.
