Portrait Drawing with Yuka Imata
Class Description:
Students will spend the first day reviewing the basic painting technique and working on simplifying the light and shadow shapes, find local colors, and learning to check the drawing issues in painting by using tools. From the second day, a step-by-step approach will be introduced to oil painting starting with a demonstration by instructor, then the students will work from the model and lay out the paint. The pose will be kept for the rest of the workshop to complete the painting. This class will provide confidence and the know how to start a painting before they begin a monthly class.
About the Instructor:
Yuka Imata earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Later, studying at the Art Students League of New York under Ronald Sherr, she won numerous awards such as the Xavier Gonzales and Ethel Edwards Grant allowing her to live and study in Spain and the Phyllis H. Mason Grant which supported her showings.
Ms. Imata has received a number of awards from the Salmagundi and Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Clubs, including the Frederick S. Church SCNY award; the Leila Gardin Sawyer Award and the Anna Hyatt Huntington Bronze Medal. She was also given the position "Honored Member" by the CLWAC. In 2006, The Allied Artists of America presented Ms. Imata with the Silver Medal of Honor. She has been featured in media magazines and newspapers such as the New York Times, the American Artist and in Plein Air. Drawing Magazine displayed her portrait work on their Autumn 2016 cover, along with publishing Ms. Imata's step-by-step tutorial article on portraiture.
In August 2015, an episode of Hannah Storm's "Face to Face" on Walt Disney's ESPN channel filmed Yuka Imata creating her portraits to great effect. She was accepted to be Artist-in-residence at both Governors Island and Bryant Park. Ms. Imata's work has been seen in shows and galleries throughout the United States; the Chelsea Art Museum (NY), the Canton Museum of Art (OH), the National Arts Club and the Cork Gallery at Lincoln Center to name a few.
Internationally, her work was seen at the Scuola Lorenzo de Medici Art Exhibition, Florence Italy, as well as in Tokyo, Yokohama and at the Museum of Kyoto, Japan, where she curated the New York exhibit.
