A personal project that I decided to take on was building a remote controlled airplane from scratch. Preliminary calculations included deciding the wing size of my plane, and the motor power output, which would dictate the size of my plane, the size of the battery, and how it would fly. I decided to use foam board for the body of the plane for its strength to weight ratio, and aluminum for the landing gear for the same reason. Personally, flying heavy planes are more difficult, and less fun. If I were to redo the design of the plane I would have made the wing out of a lighter material, and used less hot glue in the wing to reduce weight. I would have also tried to reduce the size of the fuselage, again, to reduce weight. My airplane went through two iterations of design tweaks, and if I were to further improve the design I would have to start from scratch.
