The Person-Environment-Occupation Model (PEO Model) emphasizes that occupational performance is a result of the interaction of the three elements for which it gets its name. The Person element refers to an individual's attributes, values, skills, and knowledge. Environment refers to the physical, social, cultural, and personal contexts. Occupation refers to the meaningful activities that a person engages in. Attached is a project that I completed detailing how my personal and environmental factors affect my participation in my favorite occupation, traveling.
In completing the project, I used the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF) and PEO Model to analyze my participation in travel across my lifespan. The domains of the OTPF that are relevant to the person element of the PEO Model are client factors, performance skills, and performance patterns. The remaining two domains, contexts/environments and occupations, correspond to the remaining two elements of the PEO Model.
As a young child with limited motor, cognitive, and social skills, I was limited in what activities I could participate in while on vacations. I was also highly dependent on my parents and often traveled with them. As I was not old enough to make decisions for myself, my family picked where we traveled and planned our itinerary. As I got older and developed more advanced cognitive skills I transitioned from a follower, along for the ride, to a planner. I participated in activities such as booking flights and hotels, research about what tours and events to book, and picking restaurants to dine in. With improved motor skills, I participated in high adventure activities such as hiking, swimming, and zip lining. Although I still valued traveling with family, my concept of family changed. I no longer just went on trips with my parents and sister, I started to go on vacations with my husband and his family.
P: motor, cognitive, and social skills, role as a planner, values
E: who was present during my trips, what places I visited
O: what activities I participated in
Performing this kind of analysis helped me understand the dynamic and interconnected nature of all three elements of the PEO. Over time, our growth and development as human beings causes our environments and occupations to evolve and vice versa.
