In summer 2017, I traveled to Slovakia to work at an English camp for children ages 11-19. I worked with a team of 8 other camp leaders to put on a 2-week long program. I was responsible for facilitating exercises in small and large groups. There were about 70 kids in attendance, which were split into 4 groups. I made two workshops per group. One workshop was about the basics of nutrition. We talked about their favorite foods, and I explained briefly what carbs, fat and protein are in addition to discussing different types of diets and their benefits. My second workshop was about music. I focused on showing them the sounds of different instruments, as well as explained how music can be used to bring people together. I also facilitated sessions of yoga and dance, as well as games that allowed the children to connect with each other. The camp was a challenge for the children as everything was in English and their native language is Slovak. I was able to assist in their continued English education as well as teach them about health and wellness.
I first joined the Peace Corps Program in 2017. I was given the tools I needed to make myself a better candidate for the Peace Corps. In fall 2018, I became the coordinating chair for the program. I was able to work closely with the committee and our adviser to come up with projects to enhance the program. I am grateful to have been part of the committee. The experience of being in the Peace Corps Prep program helped to make my Peace Corps application stronger.
