WHAT MIGHT BE THE BEST WAY TO LEARN ABOUT AN AIR ENGINE OTHER THAN JUMPING RIGHT IN AND DOING IT? WELL, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT WE WERE FACED WITH. WE WERE HANDED A STAPLED SHEET OF PAPER WITHIN THE FIRST COUPLE WEEKS OF CLASS THAT SHOWED AT THE TIME WHAT WE SAW AS AN EXTREMELY COMPLICATED ENGINE. IT SHOWED DIMENSIONS, DRILL CALLOUTS, NUMBERS, SYMBOLES, AND MUCH MORE THAT ALL MADE NOT A WHOLE LOT OF SENSE. HOWEVER, THROUGH BRAINSTORMING AND LOTS OF TIME TOWARDS IT, I WAS ABLE TO COME UP WITH MY VERY OWN UNIQUE CONCEPTUAL, DETAILED DESIGN FOR AN OSCILLATING AIR ENGINE. DURING THIS CONCEPTUAL DESIGN PHASE OF THE ENGINE, WE PICKED A SPECIFIC PERFORMANCE GOAL TO FOCUS OUR ENGINE ON ALONG WITH OTHER ENGINE SPECIFICS. THIS WHOLE DESIGN PROCESS INCLUDING AN INITIAL DESIGN INTENT MEMO, ENGINE CALCULATION SHEET, INITIAL ENGINE HAND DRAWINGS, AND A BILL OF MATERIALS FOR IT ALL. AFTER THIS WE TOOK IT TO THE COMPUTERS AND 3D MODELED EACH PART IN SOLIDWORKS ALONG WITH DETAILED ENGINE DRAWINGS THAT WOULD THEN BE USED AS A REFERENCE IN THE MACHINE SHOP TO BUILD THE ACTUAL ENGINE. EACH PART ONCE MACHINED NEEDED TO BE HAND ASSEMBLED INTO THE FINAL PRODUCT.
