As healthcare providers, we take care of all types of patients, in all types of settings. This paper discusses my personal experience with a patient who was on a vent and unable to communicate their needs verbally. Nursing theorist, Ida Jean Orlando, believes that the nurse needs to constantly explore their own reactions with the patient by evaluating the care they have given in terms of objectively observing the patient's outcome. This theory, called the deliberative nursing process theory, focuses on the interaction between the nurse and the patient and how well they communicate. According to her theory, the nurse remains focused on the patient, constantly reassessing their relationship, and makes adjustments as necessary.
Studies conducted on patients who have been on a ventilator did not feel that their nurse understood their needs correctly. Many reported that the nurse would misunderstand them and medicate them for pain or anxiety. Poor communication skills and not fully understanding one's patient can lead a nurse to the wrong conclusion. Orlando's theory can help nurses utilize good communication skills with their patients.
