Don’t expect to find fine dining, or to dine in, at the Tenderloin’s newest Nepali restaurant, Newa. You can, however, expect an abundance of authentic Nepalese staples like a variety of Mo: Mos ($9.99-10.99), Newari Khaja ($12.99) and Frooti juice boxes ($1.50).

The month-old restaurant is owned by Roshan Pradhan, who also owns the Tenderloin’s Red Chilli, and brags a big kitchen, small eating area and a refined menu of indigenous Nepali plates.

Though his two restaurants share a close location and a similar influence, blooming from his ethnicity, Pradhan explains that Newa is significantly different from his inaugural restaurant.
Though both of his restaurants serve Indian and Nepalese food, Newa focuses, and accentuates, the latter.

Alluded to in its name, one of Newa’s signature plates is the Newari Khaja, which features rice, fried eggs, fried fish, sukuti and more, served on a leaf Tapari plate. Pradhan, who comes from the Newari People of Nepal, enthusiastically draws the necessity of using a genuine Tapari plate, imported from Nepal.

“I want to make it the most authentic; I want to introduce Nepali food to San Francisco,” he said. “If you really want to try the food of Nepal, try the Newari Khaja.”

Also imported from Nepal is the timur spice found in the sauces served alongside Mo: Mos. Pradhan says he has his parents send him shipments of timur from his homeland because it is essential. He wants his customers to fully experience Nepali food.

“I’m giving it the most authentic [feel] I can make. If I can’t make it good, I don’t want it here,” said Pradhan.

Introducing Nepalese food to San Francisco is starting off well, according to Pradhan. The restaurant has started to gain a strong Nepali clientele for its authentic flavor and variety, boasting more Nepali customers in the last month since its opening than in the years Red Chilli has been open.

“I believe I can guarantee that none of the Bay Area Nepali restaurants have this much variety, that’s why I’m getting a lot of the Nepali customers.”

It is also extending to the general public by focusing on its take-out, and delivery initiatives, making it time-efficient and accessible for its customers. Newa delivers through several food delivery platforms like Eat24, Grubhub, Amazon Prime and Postmates. They also do catering for corporate offices.

Newa is open everyday between 11am-10pm and is located at 407 Ellis Street.
