Current methods for retrieving data from the internet depend on knowing in advance the network host of that data, and the name used by that host. These methods are highly vulnerable to network outages or host reorganizations, and are poorly suited for distribution from one source to millions of destinations. This paper gives an overview of some efforts to develop better methods which require only host-independent names to identify and retrieve data.
