Restoration of a 1966 BSA Royal Star. My father acquired this bike for free from a professor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography who was the original owner. He gave it to us free of charge under the condition that he be given an opportunity to ride it once it was done. We gladly accepted the challenge. The bike was in obviously non-running condition, so we started by stripping it completely down to the frame. From there we cleaned all the parts and the frame before reassembling. As for the motor, I took it apart only to discover that the pistons had fused to the cylinder block from all the rust (you can see it in the picture.) We were able to get them apart by heating and cooling it repeatedly with ice and a blow torch. In the engine rebuild we replaced all the gaskets, piston rings, a new cylinder block, replaced the clutch, converted the ignition to Sparx electronic ignition, among other things. The bike now runs and is a blast to ride.
