The bestselling book Moneyball demonstrated how using a strategic assessment could positively influence organizational change even under overwhelming resistance. Called sabermetrics, the general manager of the Oakland A’s Billy Beane, was able to side-step traditional practices by approaching the athlete selection process using statistical data. The method was not a new idea, but an ignored concept created by Bill James thirty years before. The player’s past batting average and on-base percentage were taken into consideration as primary indicators to predict the future performance of the player. This became the general manager’s way to measure the worth of the player to the team, directing the selection process. The sabermetric method was proven successful as the newly reorganized team of mostly unknown or generally undesirable players was able to perform in the top of the league without the organization spending more to get there.
