I did this project as an "Honors Option" in a Queer Literature class. In this paper, I analyzed James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room in terms of the misogyny that is presented through several of the characters. I ultimately argue that the the novel works as resistance against misogyny through the way Baldwin gives the character, Hella (one of the only women in the novel), considerable dialogue to express her opinions. Through communication with my professor, I learned that this was an unpopular interpretation of the text which meant that I worked very hard to gather evidence to prove my point. This was an important paper for me because I was quite busy at the time this was due, but I still worked hard to produce a rough and final draft for this well-researched assignment. I think I developed my work ethic and research capabilities during this project while gaining yet another perspective in terms of feminist analysis that will benefit me in future endeavors.
