Term Project for MECH 823: MEMS.
Designed, constructed and validated PVDF piezoelectric energy harvesting device, to be attached to rotary machine with latent vibrations ~60Hz.
The tensile and compressive forces on either surface of the piezoelectric element cause concentrations of charges to build up momentarily on metal contacts, permitting the harvesting of electrical energy - achieved via rectification and charging of capacitive elements.
Device geometry arrived at via ANSYS Mechanical simulations, MATLAB scripts, and hand calculations.
The natural frequency of the beam was found to be within 1.88% of the theoretical value, producing 242 microwatts at a maximum forcing frequency of 61.1 Hz.
