Class Description:

A painting is a truth, and its success depends not on mimicry, but rather on a sense of relational presence. We are translating our three-dimensional world to two-dimensions, taking responsibility for the rectangle in this process. Our paintings become alternate truths, or metaphors, for the world around us. With a starting point of working perceptually, from life, and in the landscape, students will develop their own painting language, aiming for a poetic presence. Through drawing and painting we will work toward “getting it right.” Formal basics such as tonality and color, interval and rhythm, and scale, will all play a role. And superseding that, the physicality of paint, as well as the expressive qualities of watercolor, will present metaphoric possibilities.

Students will work in their painting or drawing medium of choice, with a particular focus on watercolor and water media. Working outside of class time from a landscape or window view, students will upload their paintings for discussion in group critiques, as well as receive individual guidance.

About the Instructor:

Kamilla Talbot studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and the New York Studio School. Solo shows include those at Pamela Salisbury Gallery, Hudson, NY; Trygve Lie Gallery, NY; Charles P. Sifton Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; Bruno Marina Gallery, Brooklyn, NY; and at the Johannes Larsen Museum, Kerteminde, Denmark. Her watercolors and oil paintings have been exhibited in numerous groups shows in the US and in Europe. Artist residencies include a fully funded residency at the Vermont Studio Center, as well as grants to paint in Maine, Italy, Newfoundland, and Iceland. She teaches or has taught at the National Academy School; Brooklyn Botanic Garden; New York Studio School; The Art Students League, as well as privately. She has studios in Gowanus, Brooklyn and in the Catskills.
