The courses I have taken in the Knight School at Queens have shaped the way in which I approach people and cultures around the world. There’s one course that
comes to mind and that is the preparation course for the now postponed, 2020 Tokyo Olympic games. Approximately 40 students from Toyo University in Japan, were collaborating with another 40 students from our school for this course, and study abroad experience. However, due to the cancellation of the games and the trip, we still collaborated the months leading up to the games working on production assignments to get acquainted with ourselves and the work we had hoped to complete abroad. Working with other individuals around the world, we had to navigate establishing trust to be successful in our partnership and building a relationship with one another. My professors helped myself and others learn about some of the cultural customs and life that our partners in Toyo carried. By doing so we made sure to know how to best communicate effectively with them and articulate our thoughts and ideas in a manner in which our goals would be best received in a respectable manner. Culture and language barriers are difficult to navigate but not impossible. My group decided to communicate once a week via an app called LINE, similar to WhatsApp, to get to know our Toyo partners and establish a relationship that would be fruitful for our future collaboration on our projects.
