ICS 100, Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
The Emergency Management Institute developed its ICS courses collaboratively with:
1. National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG)
2. U.S. Department of Agriculture
3. United States Fire Administration’s National Fire Programs Branch
When looking at additional courses listed on the volunteer page of the Marine Mammal Center's website I found a series of ICS courses listed under external training options along with First Aid and CPR. After understanding what these FEMA courses teach and having experienced a 6.0 earthquake, massive flooding, wildfires, and the effects of a nearby hurricane, I understand how important it is to know who to turn to and how to help. This course runs through the chain of command and the protocols for setting up and helping out at emergency sites. I learned a great deal about the diverse set of roles and their hierarchy, how different organizations can work collectively, which officers and locations take on different tasks, and how incident action plans are constructed and followed.
