This past year, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to contribute to the Living Labs project on Cal Poly's campus for my First Year Honors Experience. As a team, we created and published a database for Cal Poly's Sustainability Department, highlighting several sustainability-related projects on campus. We were in communication with Kylee Singh, Coordinator of Cal Poly Sustainability, for the past two quarters while working on the project.
As a part of Phase 1 of our project, I contributed to the designing and editing of a survey sent out to multiple professors on campus. We used these survey responses to get an idea of the different sustainability-related projects on campus that we could highlight on the page we were designing.
Going into Phase 2 of our project, we split into two teams: Publicity/Web Graphics and Back-end/Web Design. I, along with Kevin Henderson, Mitchell Kanazawa, Aaron Fang, and Wesley Kwok, discussed and worked on the back-end of the website, looking into different tools we could possibly use to set up our project database. Wesley and I looked into the possibility of implementing an SQL Database in Drupal, which we used to set up our page on the Cal Poly Sustainability web page. Unfortunately, due to a lack of time, we were unable to get an SQL Database up. As an alternative, we made our website HTML/CSS based.
In order to help guide future teams who tackle this project, our group has formulated a design for the website we had hoped to create, which uses Drupal elements to create a photo carousel. Due to user limitations, we were unable to use more advanced tools, therefore unable to develop the website to, what we believe, could be its true potential.
The Living Labs web page, as well as the Sustainability website, is currently under the ownership of Cal Poly and managed by Kylee Singh.
