The purpose of this project was to design a gear box that could transmit a specified power value from a specific pinion input speed.
As a requirement Gear catalogs were consulted in order to determine the gear diameters, overall gear box size and torque ratings.
Within this project a gear stress calculation Program was created:
· The purpose of the program was to facilitate bending and contact stress calculations.
· The program used specific stress factors derived from the gear size, type and material in order to derive the contact/bending stresses.
· It should be noted that the program created only calculates the contact/bending stress for either the pinion or gear at a time depending on the stress factors input by the user, specific to the pinion or gear.
· The reliability of the program can be confirmed by calculating the contact/bending stresses for example problems 14-4 and 14-5 in the book: Shigley's Mechanical Engineering Design 10th edition on pages 760 and 763, respectively.
