An incredibly tedious yet rewarding project I committed to while attending the University of South Florida was organizing the start of a new chapter of Alpha Sigma Kappa, a STEM based sorority for women and minorities in STEM.

I especially had to commit and lead after Covid shut down in-person meetings roughly one month after our first interest event. We needed 15 students interested before we could become a Petitioning Group and work towards being a Chapter. Since communication and bonding was difficult with everything transferring online, we had to be creative and proactive to reach who we needed to.

I led collaborations with the team and delegated responsibilities for outreach to gather interest as well as plan ahead for the future. A couple of us were assigned for flyer design, some for contacting professors for email announcements, and a few of us for designing our Slack channel and keeping communications with USF to establish ourselves as a recognized organization. At the same time, we had to work on our petition and other governing documents for when our group was official with USF and our National organization.

In order to keep our members interested and start building community, I was then in charge of hosting online events for both informational meetings and bonding activities. This was especially challenging with new guidelines and virtual methods that most of us were not used to. This took a lot of researching and organizing to ensure everyone could participate and not get overwhelmed with the up rise of new information, demands of virtual skills, and new platforms to navigate.

With the upcoming new Chapter, I also had to take over executive positions as well as New Member Educator, Philanthropy chair, and head of multiple committees. Before I became an alum, I worked with my current Executive Board to build position handbooks, membership guides, and document templates to leave for the future boards. I also won multiple awards for our Chapter superlatives at the end of each semester, including 'Most Dependable' and 'ASK MVP.'

Today, the Chapter continues to thrive at USF and I couldn't be prouder of all my siblings. Building this Chapter up from the ground took incredible work and dedication of which I look back fondly at the legacy I got to leave behind.
