As a Peer Leader, I co-facilitated the First Year Experience (UNIV-1000) course with a professor, assisting 19 students through the transition to college. Through this experience, I have had the opportunity to develop my skills in classroom management, utilization of Canvas LMS, mentorship, and crisis intervention. Each week consisted of one meeting of planning and two class meetings. I had the opportunity to facilitate independently 4 of the 34 class meetings, learning from the professor how to manage the classroom and get to the goal. The professor also taught me how to use Canvas LMS when it comes to posting announcements, adding assignments, creating discussions, and grading the students' work. Through the course, I was a resource for each student to simply talk to and guide them along this transition, allowing me to fulfill the role of mentor. Lastly, I had to intervene in crises the students would be going through caused by both their academic life and outside stresses. The course showed me my passion in education and psychology is exactly where I need to be.
