This past winter, I took Principles of Marketing earlier than usual because I was considering changing my major from business administration to journalism. I took marketing because I knew that if I were to stay in the business major, I would most likely do the marketing concentration. So, I wanted to see whether I would enjoy the class, and I ended up loving it! I was placed in a group with four other students to complete a quarter-long marketing project about an innovative product that helped to promote social good in some way. My teammates and I named our group "Simon Says" after our professor Lisa Simon, and we came up with the idea of SuitUp, a jumpsuit made out of the same material as a thermal blanket. The suit would allow people experiencing natural disasters to quickly put on a suit that keeps them warm and dry in times of turmoil. When we gave our final presentation to our class of sixty students, we received a first place ranking by our professor! Through the long and rigorous process of creating a thirty page marketing plan, a presentation, and a physical prototype of our product, I learned the power of teamwork and how careful delegation of tasks can make a team project more effective and successful for everyone. I also became better at receiving constructive criticism from my marketing mentor and the class TA. Through the marketing project, I was able to use my strong skill set in writing as well as public speaking. A room for improvement I discovered was my editing skills in Adobe photoshop and premiere pro. As a future marketing concentration, I hope to build my ability to use this software when I have more time outside of this project. Although learning how to find evidence through databases like MRI Mediamark was a difficult learning experience, it proved to help me immensely in learning how to use the Library databases that Cal Poly offers. In fact, I have used some of the research skills I learned in my marketing class in the economics project I am currently in.
