Our project was in collaboration with GRID Alternatives, a nonprofit organization working to promote renewable energy and fight environmental racism by providing and installing solar panels for families of low-income. Our task was to develop a curriculum made up of learning modules for GRID's week long "Solar Futures" camp for high school students. The goal of the camp is to teach students about renewable energy as well as inspire students to go into jobs related to solar. We created our learning modules to be flexible in their implementation, because the camp is put on for students at many different stages of learning, including all ages of high school students, special education students, and engineering students. Our learning modules were filled with worksheets, lessons, and activities that were focused around background on solar energy, solar design, environmental justice, and career readiness, so we began by researching DIY activities for students as well as mock interview and resume building activities. As Cal Poly students, we wanted to bring some of our own "Learn by Doing" experiences to the Solar Futures students, so we focused mainly on activities that could be done hands-on and in a group to encourage collaboration, innovation, and engagement. Around the time we were finished developing our modules, we were lucky enough to participate in a solar-install day with GRID, which was a great way for us to reflect on the goal of our project and what we were hoping to accomplish by introducing students to solar energy. Through carrying out this project, I developed skills in professional communication, education, teaching, design, poster presentation, invention, leadership, and community-service. As someone who wants to work in the fight for environmental justice, this project was very educational and inspiring to me, and I hope to have a role in something like this again in my college career.
