Throughout this project, I was able to accomplish many of the course objectives. First, I worked on a multidisciplinary team, which allowed us to have many different perspectives. This was particularly interesting when it came to crafting a social change project, because from our many different experiences, we were able to pull together a long list of possible projects, and then use Dr. Alaniz, who has an expertise in the field, to choose the idea that we felt would be most impactful in the SLO community. We ended up choosing to do a project where we asked homeless individuals the question what is one thing someone wouldn't know about you just by looking at you. We had done research and seen this done in Orlando, and the results caused many people to change their perspectives of the population. In SLO, many police calls are for suspicious people, so the homeless population is seen as suspicious by many individuals in our community. However, responses we got such as one individual who is 33 units away from finishing their bachelor degree in business administration caused even us to rethink homelessness and see that this individual could be unknowingly the classmate of any of us. Through this project, I learned a lot about the SLO community as well as how much of an impact one sentence can have on changing the perceptions of people, and I hope projects like this are able to continue to be pursued here so that we can continue to become more accepting of the large homeless population we have here and make SLO a more sustainable community.
