DSGN 1 is a Design on Everyday Things course in UCSD. Each student starts from basic analyzation on good versus bad design and ends up prototyping and finish the whole process of a simple redesign project. Students are also required to write a journal throughout the study, to write down the everyday things they observe and record the process of the projects.
I took this course in Fall 2018 quarter. The first project I made was analytical project on good and bad design. I worked with another student Ana Selvaraj. We chose Beats headphone as a good design and a lamp in Ana's dorm as a bad design. Detail analysis and summary refer to our paper. The second project focused on user experience on a wallet, about which we did an interviews in a shopping mall and collected the data. The paper includes the thoughts and process of the whole object choice, interview design, interview, data collection and analysis, problems and conclusion. Project 2 was completed with two other group members: Ilmaa Haque and Brett Salinas. Then it comes the design of an interface. Our choice for the third project was the story sending function of SnapChat social networking app. Besides the user experience interview, we added some activities and recorded the users using this app. Collecting the data and recordings, we found out the problems on this function and did our redesign. Please refer to the project 3 paper for the redesign model. I cooperated with Apurwa Shukla, Genyuan Hu and Elias Rose for this project.
For the final project, I worked with Rongxin Zhu, Boyang Wang, Genyuan Hu and Weilun Yao for a coffee grinder redesign. The final project includes three parts: a paper, a video and a presentation. The paper records our process from object choice to prototyping and finalizing the redesign model. We included multimedia in our whole process, from a mind map, storyboarding to CAD. The video uses a storytelling way to reveal the problems on the coffee grinder. The presentation extracts the main considerations from the paper on its main problems, design space, redesign draft and design concepts. This is a integrated project to demonstrate our study on design process and ideas.
