The ball-on-flat reciprocating tribometer is used to conduct tests on a flat specimen to determine the friction coefficient between the flat specimen and the cylindrical ball in contact with the specimen. The current reciprocating tribometer in the “Tribology Laboratory” was used to conduct tests at room temperature. But, it was impossible to simulate the conditions at the cylinder-liner and piston ring tribo-contact in the internal combustion engine, because the cylinder-liner and piston ring tribo-contact has to face very high temperature inside the engine. It lacked the heating system required to heat the specimen up to a specified temperature. The study of temperature, affecting the viscosity of the lubricant is very important before using the lubricant in any lubrication system. The aim of this project is to design, manufacture and test a heater system that can be installed on the current tribometer set up without making any major changes to the current tribometer.
