Setup Day_The Finished Product

The concept of a temporary structure embodies Design Village. We constructed a small sleeping unit for my team and I to spend one night in out in Cal poly's Architecture Graveyard with our fellow students. We designed, planned, and fabricated the entire structure. Of all the projects I was a part of my first year, this was, by far, the most exciting!

To whom it may concern: Our project focused on the concept of a lotus flower. The Design Village Directors instructed us to see if we could follow the theme of "Clockwork." One could think of this as, how does the organic fit in with the inorganic in light of time? So we built an inorganic structure that would shift based upon the time of day and the functions it needed to perform. During the middle of the day, the structure is closed up so that one can lean against the cots comfortably. Into the afternoon/early evening, the petals can be shifted to a relaxed, hammock-like position in order to accommodate a refreshing nap. At night, the petals fold down completely for comfortable sleeping. This is how we chose to interact with the idea of "clockwork."
