During my undergraduate studies, my seventh-semester project was titled “Design of a Highway with improved traffic conditions “.The project was done under the guidance of the Highway Research Station (H.R.S), Chennai under Tamil Nadu State Highways Department. A stretch of 27.7 kilometers was chosen between Erode and Thingalore, two districts in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The geometric features consisting of the horizontal and vertical alignments were designed. The pavement components were designed too, based on the CBR ratio. Measures to improve the traffic conditions on the highway were suggested based on the conditions prevailing on the highway.
1. What did I learn creating this work?
Since this was the first project work that I undertook, it taught me how to go about doing a project. I learned the nuances and techniques involved in carrying out a project work. I learned what is required for a project. It was this project that inspired me to choose Transportation Engineering as my major.
2. How can the skills I used creating this work be used in other areas of my life?
Since this was a team project, I learned how to work with people and how to accommodate different ideas and opinions. I also learned how to stick to deadlines and developed time efficiency. In addition, I also learned how to present a project in front of an audience.
3. What areas of my life (curricular and co-curricular) are connected in this work?
As mentioned, this project was the driving factor for me having chosen Transportation Engineering. This project was done during my undergraduate studies.
4. What lessons have I learned? What would I have done differently? Why?
This project taught me how to be a better engineer. Since I was actively involved in other extracurricular activities like debating, oration etc. during my undergraduate studies, this project taught me how to manage time better and how to balance both academics and extracurricular activities.
When asked what I would have done differently, I wish I had started working on research even earlier. This would have helped me work on this project better and would have helped me have a deeper understanding of research.
5. How did this project help me become a better professional/student?
Given how this is the area of engineering that I want to work on, it gave me a better insight into the field of Transportation Engineering. I believe only having such hands-on experience and practical training helps a student be ready for the corporate world.
