The CSUNposium, also known as the “23rd Annual Student Research and Creative Works Symposium” is a student conference featuring oral and poster presentations. The purpose is to showcase excellence in scholarly research and creative activity conducted by CSUN students across all academic disciplines.
On April 5th, 2019, I presented at the CSUNposium university wide competition and won first place. It was a hybrid presentation/performance. Five minutes was allotted to science research about single use plastic pollution (plastic straws). 5 minutes was allotted to a performance of act II, scene II from the full length play that I wrote, "Straw Buried Fields, Forever." And the final 5 minutes was allotted to questions from the judges and the audience, for a total of 15 minutes in length.
"Straw Buried Fields, Forever" is a dark comedic musical written in three acts. The goal was to present a justification for this project and perform a scene from my full length play. A cast of seven, plus an interpreter for the hearing impaired, speaking in 8 languages in under five minutes, performed act II scene II from the play, following a developed song called, "Millions of Straws" from the final scene of the play.
I have written a full-length play about the history, use, manufacturing, and devastating effects that plastic straws have had on our planet. I also wrote a shorter educational version of the play for young audiences, designed to tour K-12 schools.
According to the Department of Natural Resources, plastics can take more than 600 years to decompose. American culture has created a legacy where straws, fishing line, and Styrofoam will not only exist a thousand years from now, but it will lay, polluting this planet, forever. In this play, forms of expressionism, realism, and absurdism often collide and clash. Characters were created based on real people in the here and now, utilizing real news articles and real manufacturing processes.
Exposition of fact, history, and plight are expressed through song and comedy. This play’s ultimate intent is, not just to entertain people, but inform and a call for straws to be banned.
