For this project I worked together with my colleagues from CSUN ASME in the design and assembly of our paper projectile machine. We used this machine to compete in the ASME SPDC competition that took place at Northern Arizona University. A simplified summary of the requirements for this project was to produce a machine that can fabricate three paper projectiles consecutively. The score was taken by taking the sum of the three distances of each projectile shot and then dividing this value by the volume of our machine. Because of this method of grading, we designed our machine to be as compact as possible to increase our score.
As a team, we designed our machine by producing a full Solidworks model. Then we worked on assembling by machining metal parts, 3-D printing parts, and also ordering some parts online. The greatest challenge we encountered in the assembly stage was integrating our electronic components into our machined assembly. We were novices at using Arduino boards and their coding, so taking our code on the computer and making it do the procedures we needed physically and precisely proved to be difficult.
My primary role in this project was designing, assembling, and also producing 3-D printed parts and prototypes. This project allowed me to incorporate my skills that I have learned in my classes such as Solidworks designing and teamwork in order to complete these tasks. Along with gaining the experience of working with a larger team, I also gained some skills such as working with a Ultimaker2 3-D printer. I have a personal 3-D printer at home, however, using the Ultimaker2 was a more convenient option for us as it allowed us to print on campus. My colleague and I had the task to produce parts from this machine.
Overall, I had a lot of fun with this project and I am very proud of our success as CSUN engineering students. We won first place in both the Advanced Manufacturing Report, and the Predictive Design and Simulation Report. Our commitment to this project showcases how dedicated and awesome the engineering students at CSUN are!
