Class Description

Bruce Dorfman has had fifty-eight solo exhibitions in N.Y., the United States and abroad. His most recent exhibitions include: Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City (2023); June Kelly Gallery, NYC (2022); Elizabeth Clement Contemporary, Boston/NYC/Miami (2021) June Kelly Gallery, NYC (2018, 2015); American Fine Arts Society Gallery, NYC (2018-19); Monmouth University, NJ Retrospective (September – December, 2016); University of Iowa Museum of Art, The Figge Museum, Iowa (2015); The Teachers of Ai Weiwei": Art Students League (2014); Zane Bennett Gallery, Santa Fe, NM, (2011); Kouros Gallery, NYC (2010, 2008, 2005); The Norton Museum, FL; The Skirball Museum, CA.

During 2021, The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art acquired three of Dorfman's recent works for their permanent collection.

Bruce Dorfman received two major Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award/Grants for 2017 and 2008. Dorfman is the recipient of many other additional awards, grants and fellowships including: New York State Council on the Arts; Fulbright Fellowship; Rockefeller Foundation; U.S. Department of State; Arts East Foundation, Washington, DC; New York World’s Fair Invitational; National Academy of Design; Des Moines Art Center; Butler Institute of American Art; and Atelier Mourlot, Paris, France.

.His work has been written about extensively, including, most recently: Gallery Guide – Cover and essay, NYC (October 2018); as well as The New York Times, Art in America, ARTnews, Hyperallegric and City Arts. His art has also received critical attention in periodicals, catalogs and monographs in the U.S. and abroad.

Bruce Dorfman has taught at the Art Students League since 1964, and the League summer school in Woodstock, NY,1964-1972. Dorfman has also taught at the New School, Syracuse University, the Everson Museum, and was Artist-in-Residence at the Norton Museum, Fl. He was a guest-artist and lecturer at museums, and art institutions in Venezuela, Portugal and France from 1993 to 1996.

Frequently noted among his many notable students over the years have been Ai WeiWei, Gary Hill and Bob Dylan.

Bruce Dorfman studied at the Art Students League with Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Arnold Blanch and Charles H. Alston. He is a graduate of the University of Iowa, where he studied with Stuart Edie, Mauricio Lasansky and art historian Roy Seiber.
