Class Description

Any form of visual experience from the clothes we wear to the paintings we most admire involve color. Color in art can be used to create space, light, emotion, and atmosphere. No two-dimensional surface is active without it. No three-dimensional space is enhanced or exists without an understanding of the nuance of color. This course is designed to ask and answer the questions of how and why color works. The class is conceived for all levels from the absolute beginner to the working artist.

About the Instructor

Lisa Dinhofer—painter, draftswoman, and printmaker—earned her BA with honors from Brandeis University and an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania. Her work has been shown extensively, both nationally and internationally. Her most recent solo shows were at the Century Association (NYC, 2015) and Denise Bibro Fine Art (NYC, 2012). Her paintings, drawings, and prints are widely collected and publicly represented at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, City College (CUNY), IBM, and other venues. In 2003, she completed a 90-foot glass mosaic mural, Losing My Marbles, which was commissioned by the MTA Arts for Transit program and is located at the Times Square subway station. Dinhofer’s comprehensive study of colored pencils, Mastering Colored Pencils, was published by Monacelli Press in 2017 and is now available for purchase.
